BEIRUT – On Sunday, militants attacked a military vehicle traveling along a desert road in central Syria, killing 13 troopers, including many officers, according to state media.
State News Agency SANA reported that the militants attacked the Palmyra area with a range of weapons and left 18 wounded.
No further information was immediately available, and no one has claimed any responsibility. Since 2019., the Syrian authorities had blamed the attacks on Islamic State militants, who were active in central and southern Syria. However, they lost territorial control over the country.
In January, IS militants fired rockets and an anti-aircraft gun at a bus traveling in the same area, killing five troops.
