A plan to make an emergency landing at LaGuardia Airport in New York City was made on Saturday. CBS New York reports .. Republic Airways’ flight arrived safely just after 3:00 p.m. ET.
“A Republic Airways aircraft, operating as American 4817, declared an emergency and landed at New York’s LaGuardia Airport without incident in response to passenger behavior near the end of the flight,” the airline said in a statement. The aircraft stopped at a taxiway after exiting the runway and performed a precautionary evacuation. The crew responded in accordance to our protocols and showed professionalism. They also cared about safety for all. The aircraft was inspected by law enforcement personnel and emergency responders. A passenger who was involved in the accident has been taken into custody. Our passengers are deeply sorry for the disruption caused to their journeys. “
Videos posted on social media show that authorities searched and restrained a face-down man on the asphalt.
The pilot had alerted authorities on the ground near the end of the flight after fellow passengers reported the man who was taken into custody, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.
” This was done in response to passengers reporting suspicious or erratic behavior from a fellow passenger,” Thomas Topousis, spokesperson for Port Authority told CBS New York. CBS New York reported that authorities also interviewed other passengers sitting nearby the suspect.
A spokesperson from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that “nothing was harmful” on board the plane. “
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York stated that there was no danger for New Yorkers. “
There were 76 passengers and six crew members on the American Airlines-operated flight arriving from Indianapolis. According to the airline, no one was hurt in the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
LaGuardia airport said in a statement shortly before 7: 30 p.m. that the incident “has been resolved, and the airport is operating normally. “
