Driver pleads guilty to crash that claimed Nicki’s father

A hit-and run driver was convicted Friday of causing the death of Nicki Minaj . He also received a promise to spend a year in prison, which disappointed both the prosecutors as well as the mother.

A state court judge in Long Island’s Nassau County found Charles Polevich guilty of leaving the scene in the February 2021 crash that killed Robert Maraj while he was walking along Mineola Road.

Polevich initially got out of his car and looked at the injured man on the ground, but then drove off, didn’t call 911, garaged his car and covered it with a tarp, authorities said. Polevich admitted to concealing his car and tampering evidence.

Maraj, 64, died at a hospital the next day.

Judge Howard Sturim stated that Polevich would spend “not more than one-year in prison,” as well as community service and a suspended licence. The 71-year-old is due to be sentenced Aug. 3.

Carol Maraj (the victim’s widow) told reporters that she wasn’t happy with the sentence. According to the widow who sued Polevich she said that seeing her husband in court made her shaken by the memories of him fighting for her life at the hospital.

Prosecutors, who sought a one-to-three-year prison sentence, also took issue with the planned penalty.

“Given defendant’s severe conduct, we disagree the sentencing committment from the court,” Brendan Brosh, spokesperson for Nassau County District Attorney’s Office said in a release.

Polevich’s lawyer, Marc Gann, called the hit-and-run “completely out of character” for his client, who hails from Long Island but has a drilling and water purification business in Guam.

“He feels tremendous sympathy for Mr. Maraj and great remorse about any part he played during his death,” Gann stated by telephone after the court. While he suggested Polevich may have suffered from a medical condition that prevented him “fully conscious” of his actions, he said it was not legal.

Messages were sent to representatives for Nicki Minaj, who called her father’s death “the most devastating loss of my life” in a post on her website last year.

Onika Tanya Mara was the mother of Grammy-nominated, platinum-selling rapper. Her songs include “Anaconda”, “Starships”, and “Super Bass.”

In interviews, she described her difficult relationship with her father many years ago. She later stated that he has changed.

She wrote that she wished she could call him after his passing. In a letter posted on her website last year, Minaj said it has been the most devastating loss of her life.

Minaj said that she finds herself wanting to call her father all the time. He’s gone, and it is more so. “
