The death toll Saturday was originally given as seven, with three people missing.

The 10 who died were part of a group of family and friends on the boat that suffered the biggest impact from the rockfall, according to rescuers.

The victims were all Brazilian nationals, aged between 14 and 68, according to preliminary investigations.

Ramilton Rodrigues, a friend of one of those who were killed, was waiting with family members for the bodies to arrive at a forensic institute in Passos, a city about 27 miles from the scene of the accident.

My friend “came to the Capitolio area to celebrate his birthday, he would have turned 25 this Sunday, but was killed a day earlier,” Rodrigues told AFP while waiting.

Tourists flock to see the cliffs, caverns and waterfalls that surround the green waters of Lake Furnas, formed by the hydroelectric dam of the same name.

One shared social media video showed the moment before the accident. It featured several people shouting at other boat occupants to get away from the rocks and warning them that “lots” of stones were falling.

President Jair Bolsonaro retweeted some of these videos on his account, and said that “as soon as the unfortunate disaster occurred, the Brazilian Navy moved to the site to rescue victims and transport the injured. “

In a statement, Bolsonaro said officials would “investigate the causes and circumstances” of the deadly incident. A diving team had to suspend its search for safety reasons overnight, however other rescuers kept working. The divers resumed their search on Sunday.

Extremely heavy rainfall has been recorded in the region of southeastern Brazil in recent days, which may have contributed to the sudden collapse. On Saturday, a dike overflowed at an iron ore mine 300 kilometers to the east, Reuters reported. Tiago Antonelli from the Brazilian Geological Service’s Applied Geology Division stated that the cliff wall was subject to decades of erosion, and is susceptible to heat, rain and cold.

” It’s common for this to occur in canyons even with large rocks. Antonelli stated that tourists are now able to travel closer and record these events with their phones, thanks to the increased tourism.

Geographer Eduardo Bulhoes of the Fluminense Federal University told AFP rock falls in the area, where natural erosion is continually taking place, were more likely to occur during the rainy months of December and January. To avoid any future incidents, Eduardo Bulhoes of the Fluminense Federal University stated that tourists should be kept away from the cliffs in the rainy seasons.
